37% of COVID-19 Patients Lose Sense of Taste: Study

A new study suggests that around four in 10 COVID-19 patients experience some sort of taste loss.

An analysis by the Monell Chemical Senses Center, a nonprofit research institute in Philadelphia, suggests that 37% of COVID-19 patients lost their sense of taste and the reports of taste loss are can be distinguished from loss of sense of smell.

Investigators assessed data from around 138,785 COVID-19 patients from 241 studies that evaluated taste loss and had been published between May 15, 2020, and June 1, 2021. Among these patients, 32,918 reported having some form of taste loss. Female patients appeared to have a higher likelihood of losing their sense of taste.
